Everything you need to become an expert on Sofia's sights.
Much of the interest in a city for the tourist is the influence of it's history, so here is a very brief history of the area.
Thracians moved into what is now Bulgaria in the fourth millennium BC, and much later, about 100 AD, the Romans took control. The first Bulgarian state was formed in 681, after Slavs moved to the area in the 5th century. The Byzantine Empire conquered Bulgaria in 1014. There was also a second kingdom which began in 1185, but there were wars with the Serbs, the Hungarians and the Ottoman army which took over in 1396.
Sofia was settled about 7000 years ago by the Thracians, but it was originally named Serdica by the Romans. Owing to it’s geographical location, Sofia became the nation’s fourth capital in 1879. War and Communism held up the aesthetic development of Sofia for a long period of time. In the 15th century the name Serdica was changed to Sofia, the Greek word for wisdom.
